Sister Janet Peters Renews Chaplain Certification

November 24th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE - Sister Janet Peters, RSM, Director of Pastoral Care at Adirondack Medical Center, has been granted renewal of her certification as a chaplain.

This professional achievement is public recognition by the Catholic Church in the United States of Sister Janet's pursuit of education for ministry and is prepared for and personally committed to quality pastoral care.

"Sister Janet has guided our patients and their families through some very challenging times," said Chandler Ralph, President & CEO of AMC.  "Many people do not realize the extensive role she plays beyond spiritual support.  Sister Janet is a dedicated patient advocate, and her commitment to quality health care and improving the process by which care is provided is truly admirable."

The certification is through the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) and its Certification Commission.  The commission is authorized by and bases its certification upon the standards and procedures approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Commission of Certification and Accreditation.  Sister Janet was first certified by the commission in 2004.

Professional chaplains provide clinical pastoral assessment skills and spiritual care planning, grounded in a theological foundation, to persons who are suffering in mind, body and spirit.  Professional chaplains serve on the clinical interdisciplinary team, and represent the presence of the Sacred to patients, families, staff, and the local community.  Sister Janet serves as a resource for ethical and end-of-life decision making, providing spiritual support and guidance.  By meeting spiritual needs, she enables people to draw upon the strength of their religious faith to face the challenges in their lives.

Sister Janet established the Department of Pastoral Care at AMC in September 2002, and works closely with the Tri-Lake Clergy to meet the spiritual needs of the people of the North Country.
