Ribbon Cutting Held to Open New Breast Imaging Center

October 30th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE - With the cutting of a single pink ribbon, Adirondack Medical Center officially opened its Countess Alicia Spaulding-Paolozzi Breast Imaging Center on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The Breast Imaging Center was in large part made possible by a $500,000 grant from the Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation, which was founded by Countess Alicia Paolozzi to support efforts concerning the environment, the sustainability of agriculture, and issues involving both the elderly and women.  Prior to her death in 2002, the Countess maintained a residence in Saranac Lake, in addition to homes in New York City and Charleston, S.C.

"The countess was an advocate and activist for women's causes, particularly those related to health care," said Cyndee McGuire, Chief Operating Officer of AMC, at the ribbon cutting ceremony on Oct. 28.  "Therefore it is befitting that AMC name its breast imaging center in her honor."

As part of AMC's ongoing mission of enhancing vital health care services close to home, the new Breast Imaging Center offers a digital mammography suite, breast MRI, and additional capacity for breast ultrasound.  AMC will also offer a new diagnostic modality known as Breast Specific Gamma Imaging, which is a non-invasive test that has a 97 percent accuracy rate in cancer detection.

AMC's Gamma Imaging equipment is the only one of its kind north of New York City.

Because the imaging tools use different types of imaging technology, together they will give physicians the range of tools they need for the over 400 women per month that receive mammograms at Adirondack Medical Center.

Most importantly, the breast imaging team has been enhanced with the addition of a Breast Care Coordinator position.  Once hired, this person will help AMC's patients navigate through follow up, further diagnostic study, education and coordination of care.  The current breast imaging team consists of Dr. Richard Moccia, Medical Director of the Radiology and Medical Imaging Department; Dr. Mary Woodhouse, General Surgeon and Director of the Comprehensive Breast Imaging Program; Dr. Howard Novick, Breast Fellowship Trained Radiologist and Director of Breast Imaging; Melinda Serrano, Medical Imaging Director; and Kathy Nixon, Lead Mammography Technician and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) Coordinator.

As the leading provider of health care in the Tri-Lakes region and beyond, Adirondack Medical Center has hospitals in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, primary care clinics in Keene, Lake Placid, and Tupper Lake, and two skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
