Retrospective Art Show at AMC-Uihlein

March 12th, 2007

SARANAC LAKE - AMC-Uihlein in Lake Placid, will host a retrospective art show of the paintings of Esther Cohen on Sunday, March 18, from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
Esther Cohen, a resident of AMC-Uihlein, graduated from Girl's Commercial High School in Brooklyn, New York. Her talents as an illustrator led her to a career as a fashion illustrator in New York City for major department stores -- illustrating clothing and accessories ads for the city's newspapers.  Following her marriage to Robert Cohen in 1941, Mrs. Cohen moved to his Army base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she worked as a cartographer creating maps for the New Mexico Soil Conservation Authority.
Later that year, she was recruited by the armed services on a secret project:  The development of aerial maps to be used in the now-famous Doolittle's Raid on Tokyo of April 1942 - the first air raid to strike the Japanese islands. Planned as an immediate retaliation for the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, this raid was considered to have had a profound impact on the war, helping America and its allies gain momentum in the Pacific Theater.
Following WWII, Mrs. Cohen returned to New York where she raised three daughters and pursued fine arts as a painter and instructor. She and her husband retired to Florida in 1984. After his passing in 2000, she moved to AMC-Uihlein in Lake Placid, to be closer to her daughter, Debbi Mowka, a resident of Rainbow Lake. Her extended family includes five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mrs. Cohen has completed over 50 works in oil and watercolor. In celebration of her career and 84th birthday, 25 selected paintings will be shown in the auditorium at AMC-Uihlein the afternoon of March 18th.  The exhibit is open to the public at no charge.  Live music will be performed and cake and coffee will be served.
