Proper Disposal of Used Needles

April 16th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE – As an ongoing public service to the community, Adirondack Medical Center will accept used hypodermic needles and syringes for proper and safe disposal as medical waste.
AMC will accept used needles, when delivered according to the following criteria, from private individuals who live in the greater Tri-Lakes community.
    Criteria for accepting used needles:
      - Used needles must be in a puncture resistant and non-breakable container with a lid securely in place. These can be a commercially produced needle disposal unit or clearly labeled plastic containers (labeled “Used Needles”).
      - The needles must be handed to an employee working in a specified department (see below) when bringing in the needles. The needles cannot be simply “dropped off,” or left unattended.
    Special Considerations:
      - This service is for individuals only and does not include any commercial operations, physician offices, non-AMC clinics, ARC residences, alcohol rehab facilities, etc.
      -  Because this is a community service, there is no charge.
      -  The public can still dispose of their used needles and syringes originating from “home use” at public landfills or through their commercial disposal services.
Used needles in puncture resistant containers will be accepted at the AMC Laboratory, Pharmacy, Health Centers, and Nursing Homes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, they will be accepted at the Emergency Center, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
