Physician Assistants at Adirondack Health earn specialty certifications

March 5th, 2012

SARANAC LAKE - Two physician assistants on the Adirondack Health Medical Staff are among a handful in their field to earn a new specialty credential from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

William Marinis was awarded Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Emergency Medicine and Nephrology.  He is one of only 14 physician assistants in New York State to receive a CAQ in Emergency Medicine, and the only one to earn a CAQ in Nephrology.  Roy "Skip" Parker has also received his CAQ in Emergency Medicine.  These distinctions are earned by meeting licensure, education and experience requirements and then passing an exam in the respective specialty.

"The additional specialty training received by Bill and Skip is clear evidence of our medical staff's dedication and commitment to high standards of care and outcomes for our patients," said Dr. William Viscardo Jr., Chief Medical Officer for Adirondack Health.

Certified physician assistants are licensed and certified health care professionals who practice medicine with physician supervision and bring a breadth of knowledge and skills to patient care.  Though their role in any particular workplace is determined in consultation with the supervising physician, certified physician assistants take medical histories, conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventative care, assist in surgery, perform a variety of procedures and write prescriptions.

Marinis joined the Adirondack Health Medical Staff in 1992, and works in the Emergency Department at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, and in the Dr. David F. Thomashow Renal Center at Adirondack Medical Center.  Parker has been on the Adirondack Health Medical Staff since 1979, and works in the Emergency Departments located in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake.
