Physical Therapist Assistant nets national honors

October 25th, 2006

SARANAC LAKE - Lyn MacAlpine, PTA, MS, who is a physical therapist assistant at Adirondack Medical Center, was recently one of 23 individuals in her profession to be recognized nationally for demonstrating "extraordinary service early in his or her physical therapy career."
The "Emerging Leader" award given by the American Physical Therapy Association is to identify and honor physical therapists or physical therapist assistants within the organization for demonstrating extraordinary service early in their physical therapy career.
"Lyn is a valuable asset to the physical rehabilitation team here at AMC," said Rick Preston, director of Rehabilitation, "Her perseverance and dedication to the profession and to her patients are very admirable."
Lyn, who has been employed at AMC since October 2002, began her participation in APTA as a student delegate to the Delegate Assembly in 2002. Soon after graduation, she was actively involved in APTA at the district, chapter, and national levels. By 2005, Lyn was chair of the PTA Committee of the New York Physical Therapy Association, at which time she established PTA liaisons in the districts, organized the committee's activities, and focused committee efforts on increased PTA participation at all levels of APTA.
On the national level, Lyn represented New York as the PTA representative to the National Assembly in 2004 and 2005. She was also selected by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy to the National Physical Therapy Examinations Physical Therapy Assistant Task Force for the analysis of PTA entry-level activities.
A retired Naval Officer, Lyn came to physical therapy as a second career and, according to her colleagues, uses her past experiences to enhance synchrony in PT-PTA teams thus improving care for patients.
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is a national professional organization representing more than 66,000 members. Its goal is to foster advancements in physical therapy practice, research, and education.
