Participants Sought for Diabetes Education Program

April 28th, 2010

SARANAC LAKE - The alarming statistics and serious complications associated with diabetes are certainly cause for concern, however, the good news is today's technological advances and knowledge help people with diabetes to live long and healthy lives.

Education is the key to successful diabetes management. Positive actions taken by the individual and their health care team can make a powerful difference. Statistically only seven percent of Americans meet all three management goals for blood glucose, blood pressure and blood lipids.  Learning the skills of diabetes self-management and developing one's own strategy for implementation can empower an individual to achieve better health and quality of life

On Wednesday, May 12, Adirondack Medical Center will begin its latest six-week Comprehensive Diabetes Self-Management Education Program.  The course is taught by an interdisciplinary team including three physicians, a pharmacist, physical rehabilitation therapist, a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator, registered nurses and health educators.

The program takes place on six consecutive Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Redfield Board Room of Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.  The sessions include valuable information on nutrition, exercise, medications, insulin pumps and prevention of acute and chronic complications.

A physician referral is needed for insurance and Medicare or Medicaid coverage.  Scholarships are available through the AMC Foundation.  Call 897-2611 with questions or to register.

The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at AMC is accredited by the American Diabetes Association.
