New physician caring for Mercy and Uihlein Living Center residents

August 27th, 2012

SARANAC LAKE - Residents of Mercy and Uihlein Living Centers now have a permanent doctor they can call their own.

Adirondack Health has recruited Dr. Avi Hettena to serve as Medical Director for the Living Centers in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.  Dr. Hettena has hit the ground running, and is already making a positive impression with residents.

"Dr. Hettena is very friendly and has a good sense of humor," said Uihlein resident John Reilly, adding that humor is a valuable trait to have in a doctor.

As medical director, Dr. Hettena is involved in all aspects of care provided for residents at both Living Centers.  He will oversee and guide the health and well-being of all residents, and play a central role in identifying opportunities for quality improvement.  He is also responsible for providing education to staff and others in the community to promote a broader understanding of the unique nature of long term care.

Dr. Hettena is board certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine, and received his Medical Degree from Yale University School of Medicine.  He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Yale College.

Dr. Hettena completed a surgical residency at University of Minnesota Hospitals; internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wis.; and was a research specialist in Hematology-Oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

He earned a Fellowship in Nephrology from the University of California, and was later the attending physician for nephrology at the San Francisco General Hospital.  Most recently, Dr. Hettena operated a private practice for internal medicine and nephrology in San Francisco.

Dr. Hettena, who is from New York originally, and his wife, who is from Montreal, made the move back east to be closer to family.  Their hobbies include the opera, symphony and ballet.  His wife is also a ballet teacher.
