National Health Care Week Promotes Message of Healing
May 4th, 2008
SARANAC LAKE – America’s hospitals and nursing homes are positive, vital places that promote health and well being. That’s the message health care facilities across the country are voicing as they celebrate National Health Care Week 2008.
“While healing and promoting wellness are a year-round mission, it is important to set aside a week to recognize both the health care employees and the communities we serve,” said Chandler Ralph, AMC President & CEO. “We are eternally grateful to the Tri-Lakes region and beyond for being such strong supporters of Adirondack Medical Center.”
For 2008, organizers have selected a united theme that emphasizes the healing process: “National Health Care Week—Where Healing Happens Every Day.”
Keeping health care in a positive light is part of the tradition of National Health Care Week, a celebration of care that dates back to 1921. That year, a magazine editor in Chicago suggested an annual “open house” for health care where a skeptical public could have see first hand the important work performed inside hospitals. The idea spread across the country and helped change the perception about hospitals from places of illness to places of healing. Today, National Health Care Week is the nation’s largest health care celebration.
Adirondack Medical Center is kicking off the celebration of National Health Care Week with an exclusive screening and book signing of “Forgotten Ellis Island” on Friday, May 9th at 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. This is the first film and book, by Lorie Conway, to be produced about the immigrant hospital on Ellis Island.
This year’s Health Care Week event is planned for May 11-17, 2008. The AMC Community Health and Wellness Department will be providing FREE health screenings, which include testing for total cholesterol, high-density lipids, glucose, blood pressure, and percent body fat to community members from 12 to 3 p.m. at the following locations:
- Tuesday, May 13th in the Fitzpatrick Room at AMC-Uihlein, Lake Placid
- Wednesday, May 14th in the Main Lobby of AMC in Saranac Lake
- Thursday, May 15th in the Main Lobby of AMC-Mercy, Tupper Lake
In addition, AMC is hosting several events throughout the week to show its appreciation to staff for their hard work throughout the year. AMC employees over 900 people at its hospitals in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, primary clinics in Keene, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake, and two skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
