MobiLab Improves Patient Safety at AMC

March 3rd, 2009

SARANAC LAKE – As part of its ongoing commitment to patient safety, Adirondack Medical Center has implemented a new technology for taking bedside blood samples.
A device, known as MobiLab, uses a secure wireless connection to AMC’s database to scan a barcode on the patient’s identification bracelet.  A Point of Care Technician or phlebotomist is then required to confirm a secondary identification method, such as a date of birth, in order to complete the positive patient ID process.  This will then allow the technician to generate on a portable printer at the patient’s bedside the appropriate label for the specimen container after the blood sample has been taken.
By utilizing the wireless handheld and printer technology, MobiLab is designed to reduce patient identification and specimen labeling errors, while increasing productivity of the AMC phlebotomy and nursing staff.  AMC is one of only a few health care facilities in the state to take advantage of this new technology.
AMC has 12 of the MobiLab devices, and has implemented their use at its facilities in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.  Eventually, the devices will be used in the Emergency Departments in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake as well.
Adirondack Medical Center operates hospitals in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, Primary Care Clinics in Keene, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake, and Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Facilities in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
