Make the Most of Your Training With Lactate Threshold Testing

December 21st, 2010

SARANAC LAKE - Every athlete wants to train more efficiently, and now there is a program offered by Adirondack Medical Center to help people make the most of their training time.

When athletes exercise, their bodies produce lactate, and as the exercise intensifies so does the production of lactate.  The Lactate Threshold is reached when the body can no longer absorb the lactate being produced, and as this happens, the body has a harder time keeping up with the energy demand of the physical activity.

AMC's Department of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation offers Lactate Threshold Testing to measure the amount of lactate in the blood at various workloads.  This information helps the athlete and coach to better understand how the body works in response physical activity.  The results of testing can help to establish heart rate zones, tailor a workout or set a race pace to achieve the best performance.  In addition, AMC's Exercise Physiologists, Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapists can use the results of the Lactate Threshold Test to design individualized programs to assist athletes in reaching their potential.

The addition of a performance testing aspect to the broad spectrum of services offered by AMC's Exercise Physiologists, Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapists enhances services to the athletic population.

While the weather may limit training during the winter, now is the perfect time to have your threshold tested.  The aerobic base built during the next few months is an important determining factor in summer-time performance.  With testing, the intensity of aerobic base training can be determined, providing you with the maximum benefit in least amount of time.

Any endurance athlete may take advantage of our services, regardless of ability.  This testing is not only for elite athletes; it is for anyone who wants to train more efficiently.  Runners can be tested on a treadmill and cyclists on a Computrainer stationary trainer.  Coaching services are also offered to make the best use of the information athletes will receive through Lactate Threshold Testing.  For the first ten athletes to sign up for coaching, the initial $100 start up fee will be waived.  Gift certificates are available.
