Life Vial Distribution a Tremendous Success

July 1st, 2009

SARANAC LAKE - The recent Life Vial distribution held at Adirondack Medical Center in conjunction with Kinney Drugs was a tremendous success with 120 Life Vials and 100 Mobile Life Vials distributed to the public.

In conjunction with the free distribution, AMC's Patient Educator, Linda Savarie, RN, was on hand to address issues such as the medication safety and other relevant health and medication issues.  Linda also oversees the Decker Community Learning Center, which offers information and education on a wide variety of topics.  Linda also helps patients and families with answers to health related questions and to explain complex health issues.  In addition, pharmacists from the AMC Pharmacy provided information and answered questions about medication and the proper administration for individual use. The Community Health Manager was on hand as well to provide free screenings and answer health and lifestyle questions.

As an incentive, the hospital also held a raffle for three AMC rolling coolers.  The winners were Tri-Lakes residents Joan Dreissigacker, Daniel Frechette and William Ryan.

The Life Vial is a free kit that will act as a person's voice when they are unable to communicate for themselves during a medical emergency.  The kit contains a form that outlines a person's medical conditions, allergies, current medications including dosages and frequency, treating doctor(s), emergency contacts and insurance information. When completed, this form is placed inside a bottle marked "Life Vial" and is stored inside the person's refrigerator.

To ensure that responding paramedics are aware that a patient has a Life Vial, the kit includes stickers for the home's front and back doors as well as a magnet for the refrigerator notifying them to look inside the refrigerator.

Like the traditional Life Vial, the Mobile packet will act as a person's voice when they are unable to communicate for themselves in the event of an accident, or on-road emergency.  The packet contains the same form as in the traditional Life Vile.  When completed, this form is placed inside a plastic sleeve and is stored inside the person's glove box of their vehicle.

To ensure that responding paramedics are aware that a patient has Life Vial Mobile, the kit includes stickers for the vehicle's rear back windows.  All EMTs within Adirondack Medical Center's service area will receive a poster and a letter explaining the new program.
