Letter to Editor: Thank You Congressman McHugh

April 9th, 2006

Dear Editor,

Kudos to Congressman John McHugh! We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Congressman for his leadership role in writing a letter to Budget Committee Chairman Jim Nussle (R-IA), taking a strong stand against the $36 billion dollar cut to Medicare over five years that was proposed in the 2007 federal budget.

The cuts were drastic enough to convince 61 Republican Congressional Members to join Congressman McHugh and sign on to the letter to convey their opposition. Eight of the nine New York Republican House members signed the letter, including Congressman John Sweeney. We want to thank Congressman McHugh for his initiative and Congressmen Sweeney for his support. Due to this initiative, the House Budget Committee approved a federal fiscal year 2007 Budget Resolution that does not include these cuts.

We are fortunate in the North Country that we have a federal representative with a clear understanding of the intense effect these large cuts would have had on our lives and our local North Country hospitals. We all recognize that healthcare costs are rising, but simply cutting reimbursements to our hospitals will not solve this problem. Hospitals are already stretching scarce resources while caring for every individual that comes through our doors, striving to improve our services, and investing in improved equipment and facilities. Hospitals are not just a part of the community safety net, but are also, especially in the North Country, an anchor for the local economy.

We hope to be working with our local, state, and federal legislators and our community members to improve the system so that we can achieve health and stability for our hospitals. This, in turn, will do the same for our communities and the family and friends that we have the privilege of serving.

As usual, Congressman John McHugh stepped forward in a leadership role with the good of the community and his constituents always front and center.

      Thank you again, Congressman McHugh!

Sincerely,

Reverend George Nagle                  Chandler M. Ralph
