Graduate Nurses Join the Ranks of AMC

June 11th, 2008

SARANAC LAKE - Adirondack Medical Center recently welcomed five Graduate Nurses who began working on the medical and surgical floors, as well as the ICU in Saranac Lake.  The recent grads said they are excited to be working at AMC, and expect to take an exam in the coming weeks to become full-fledged Registered Nurses.
Each Graduate Nurse (GN) is assigned a “preceptor” who works with and guides the GN for about a 12-week period.  The preceptor is a Registered Nurse, and has had specific training to serve in that capacity.
The GN is not part of the regular staffing mix during their orientation.  Orientation may be extended if either the GN, the preceptor, or nurse managers think it is warranted.  All of the GNs have specific competencies, or skill sets, they need to demonstrate before being released from orientation.   Any hands-on care provided by the GNs is done so while their respective preceptor is close by at all times.
This latest group of GNs are graduates of North Country Community College in Saranac Lake.  Adirondack Medical Center operates hospitals in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, primary care clinics in Keene, Lake Placid, and Tupper Lake, and skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.  With over 920 employees, AMC is the largest private employer in the Adirondack Park.
