Garden Club of Lake Placid Spruces Up AMC-Uihlein Garden

September 14th, 2010

SARANAC LAKE - The garden at AMC-Uihlein in Lake Placid is much more verdant thanks to the green thumbs of the Garden Club of Lake Placid.

Jini Wood is the Past President of the club and the Chairwoman of the Memorial Garden Project at AMC-Uihlein.  She spearheaded a group of 20 volunteers who took on the task of breathing new life into the green space adjacent to an outdoor activity and dining area at the Skilled Nursing Facility.

The idea began with a fund donated in memory of deceased club members and a discussion with AMC-Uihlein Horticulturist Pearl McCahill.  Last summer, garden club volunteers began the work of clearing old plants and pulling shrubs.  The vegetation was then replaced with hydrangeas, lilacs, lilies, black-eyed susans, sumac and evergreens to conceal the piping for the water fountain.  Now that a much greener and more floral garden has taken hold, club volunteers take turns maintaining the space by weeding and watering on a weekly basis.

Jini is pleased the garden club played a vital role in creating an area where residents and their guests can be outside in the sunshine, surrounded by a beautiful garden.

"We were happy to make an attractive place for people to sit and enjoy," Jini said.

The garden will be maintained by future donations and volunteer hours from club members.
