Functional Capacity Evaluations Offered at AMC

SARANAC LAKE -Functional Capacity Evaluations are now offered through the Physical Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Department at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a scientifically developed objective process to measure a worker's physical abilities and tolerance levels.  It can also determine if these abilities match the worker's job requirements, particularly after recovering from an injury.

The evaluation is administered by a trained Occupational Therapist, and requires a physician referral and payment agreement from the employer and workers' compensation or insurance provider. 

AMC's functional capacity evaluator will administer FCE's using tools that are peer-reviewed, fact based under legal guidelines in the field of occupational rehabilitation.  

This focused evaluation is for individuals who:

• Need their work ability quantified, including well defined work restrictions, prior to vocational job search or return to work.
• Are unsure if they can safely return to their previous job.
• Want alternative options/recommendations to facilitate their return to work.
• Are awaiting impairment rating and case closure.
• Have a long standing workers' compensation case or disability case that is unresolved for various reasons.

The time it takes to complete an FCE can vary from two hours to an entire day determined by the extent of the injury, job responsibilities and functional abilities of the person being tested.  The person will be asked to perform various activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, prolonged standing, endurance tests and other simulated job tasks.
