Friends, Co-workers Toast Sister Janet Peters
January 7th, 2010
SARANAC LAKE - Over 250 friends, co-workers, and well-wishers attended a celebration in honor of Sister Janet Peters, who recently retired as the widely respected and much beloved Director of Pastoral Care at Adirondack Medical Center.
Serving as the first Director of Pastoral Care, Sister Janet has been with AMC since September 2002, and was responsible for establishing the program after a grant was secured from the Uihlein Foundation. In recognition of her years of service and commitment, the chapel at AMC was dedicated in honor of Sister Janet.
An engraved plaque will be placed near the entrance of the chapel, dedicating it in her honor as the first director of pastoral care for AMC. The plaque states, "She truly enriched the lives of those she served. We will be eternally grateful."
"I have been blessed to know and work with Sister Janet for several years prior to both of our arrivals at AMC," said Chandler Ralph, president and CEO. "What she has done for the Medical Center and residents of this community is immeasurable, and I know she has touched the lives of so many people throughout the Tri-Lakes region."
After presenting Sister Janet with the dedication plaque and a large framed photograph of Addie the Eagle, AMC's unofficial mascot, she addressed the numerous well-wishers in attendance.
"I have met thousands of patients and family members over the years, walked with the critically ill and many who were in the last moments of their life's journey," noted Sister Janet. "This would not have been possible without the tremendous care of the nurses, physicians, and support staff ... thank you for caring so much!"
As director of pastoral care, Sister Janet promoted holistic patient care at AMC, which provides spiritual and emotional care, crisis intervention, assistance in completing advance directives, and assisting patients, family members and friends during difficult life decisions and issues.
By meeting spiritual needs, Sister Janet's service enables people to draw upon the strength of their spirituality to meet the challenges in their lives.
"I minister to all patients who express a religious preference or a spirituality that helps them cope with illness, loss, and life transitions," Sister Janet said. "When a patient is not connected to any faith community, they often experience vulnerability and the need for spiritual support."
While Sister Janet is retired from her official duties as the director of pastoral care at AMC, by no means is she slowing down. She plans to relocate to Sackets Harbor, where she will minister at St. Andrew's Parish, as well as visiting the infirm in their homes and hospital. Sister Janet will also spend time reconnecting with family and friends in the Watertown area.
AMC is currently in the process of recruiting a new director of pastoral care. For more information about the programs and services at AMC, log onto www.amcCares.org.
