Entire nursing staff at Merrill Oncology Center holds specialty certification

January 4th, 2012

SARANAC LAKE - William Chamberlain, a registered nurse in the Merrill Oncology Department at Adirondack Medical Center, recently earned his certification in oncology nursing.

This latest achievement means the entire nursing staff in the department is now certified in the specialty of oncology care.

A nursing specialty certification demonstrates both a commitment to professional development and nursing practice excellence while pursuing the goal of providing the best possible patient care.  In fact, there is a growing body of research that indicates a direct link between specialty certification and enhanced patient care.

While it is important to have a high degree of clinical competence, the specialty certification signifies a commitment to the unique and individual needs of patients requiring cancer treatment.

To become a certified oncology nurse, the individual must already be an RN and have 1,000 hours of oncology experience.  In addition, William received education in oncology nursing and successfully completed the oncology certification examination.

Along with William, Sara Ames, Gina DuMond, Laura Palmer and Mia Ross are certified oncology nurses.  Both Sara and Mia possess additional training as certified Nurse Practitioners.
