Don Lewis Joins AMC as New Assistant Vice President of Long Term Care

May 8th, 2008

SARANAC LAKE – Don Lewis has returned to the North Country to accept the position of Assistant Vice President of Long Term Care for Adirondack Medical Center.
Don replaces Michele Byno who was recently named Vice President of Long Term Care for Adirondack Medical Center.  While Michele is serving as the Administrator of Record for AMC-Uihlein in Lake Placid, Don will be the Administrator of Record at AMC-Mercy in Tupper Lake.  He reports directly to Michele, and collaborates with her on the skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities’ quality management programs, case management and employee relations among other projects.
“We are very excited to have Don as part of our team,” Michele said. “He has a great depth of experience in long term care, especially in rural settings.  We couldn’t ask for a better fit with Don at AMC-Mercy.”
Most recently, Don was working at the Kona Community & Kohala Hospital, West Hawaii, where he served as Regional Chief Executive Officer.  Prior to that, he served as President and CEO for Schuyler Hospital, in Montour Falls, N.Y.; President and CEO for Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, N.Y.; and CEO of Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, St. Johnsbury, Vermont.  In fact, the majority of Don’s work experience is as an administrator of acute and long term care facilities in rural settings, which has been an intentional decision on Don’s part.
Don, who is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, admits that working in Hawaii had its perks, however, living there kept him at a distance from his family living in northern New York and elsewhere along the east coast.
The combination of his knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with the opportunity to move closer to his family were the main driving forces in his decision to oversee operations at AMC-Mercy.
“The people at Mercy are super,” Don further remarked “There is a great sense of teamwork and collegiality among the staff.”
While Don is still settling into his new position, he plans to maintain the high quality of care and to improve upon the solid work already underway at AMC-Mercy.
Don and his wife Terry are currently seeking a permanent residence in the area.  Together they have four adult children - three daughters and a son – and one grandchild, with another on the way.
