Budget Cuts Would Impact AMC’s Economic Benefit to Community

February 11th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE – Health facilities have long been viewed as major drivers of local economies.
In 2006, Adirondack Medical Center generated an economic benefit of $96.6 million for the local economy.  This significant impact is the result of the payroll for a nearly 831-person workforce, the purchase of goods and services, and capital spending.  The figure also includes the generation of income and sales tax revenues as well.  The 2006 data is the most recent available for the economic benefit calculation, and it is almost certain the number has grown since then.
The economic benefit AMC generates is in jeopardy, however, given the proposed cuts put forth by Gov. David Paterson.  So in addition to the programs and services threatened by the proposed budget cuts, there is this added dimension of negatively impacting a revenue stream from which the surrounding communities benefit.
“We clearly understand the financial challenges being faced by the state and nation.” said Chandler Ralph, AMC President and CEO, “However, hospitals and nursing homes are part of the solution, and not the problem, when it comes to both the community’s physical and financial health.”
Statewide, health care facilities are facing $3.5 billion in proposed budget cuts.  To contact your state lawmakers regarding the cuts to health care, log onto www.helpyourhospital.org or www.helpyournursinghome.org.
