Adirondack Health celebrates National Patient Safety Week

March 2nd, 2012

SARANAC LAKE - In an effort to encourage the engagement of patients and long term care residents, families, health care providers and the public, Adirondack Health is celebrating National Patient Safety Week with several events.

During the week of March 4, Adirondack Health will be announcing the Peak of Excellence Award winners.  The annual award is given to an outstanding, interdisciplinary and innovative project which achieves measurable quality improvement outcomes for patients and residents that can be sustained over time.

Awards will be presented to four initiatives at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6 in the Main Lobby of Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony, and to view all of the award submissions that will be on display in the main lobby from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Team leaders from the various initiatives will be on hand to answer questions.

In addition to the Peak of Excellence Awards, Adirondack Health staff will be on hand to answer questions about safety issues in a health care environment, and what we all can do to improve patient and resident safety.

This year's theme for Patient Safety Week, "Be Aware for Safe Care," highlights the need for everyone to understand the importance of patient safety and to recognize the range of efforts being made to improve health safety in the U.S. and worldwide. Moreover, the campaign seeks to make patients, providers, and the public aware of the ways they can participate in these activities and partner to improve patient safety. While initiatives over the past decade have brought improvements, recent studies indicate that much work remains to be done-and can be done most effectively through the involvement of all parties.

Now more than ever in health care, a focus on empowering patients and strengthening patient-provider communications are seen as paramount to reducing errors. We all need to "Be Aware for Safe Care."
