Adirondack Health Rehab staff certified in new soft tissue treatment technique

December 17th, 2012

SARANAC LAKE - Twenty members of Adirondack Health's Rehabilitation and Sports Science staff have received advanced certification to provide a unique treatment that targets physical movement limited by pain or injury related soreness.

The rehabilitation staff recently participated in an advanced seminar to become skilled in the provision of Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTM), also known as "Graston Technique." This method combines the hands-on care already provided by our therapists, with specialized instruments used to break down tissues that may be restricting certain movements. The sound-assisted soft-tissue treatment may help improve physical mobility for patients following surgery or who have suffered repeated strains, sprains and other injuries.

David Graston, considered a pioneer in instrument-assisted soft tissue treatment, taught the course at Adirondack Medical Center, a member of Adirondack Health. David has worked with health and medical professionals world-wide to develop a number of techniques used to accelerate healing through the use of specialized soft tissue manipulation. Clients include the NFL, NHL, NBA, Cirque du Soleil, PGA and the Woman's Tennis Association to mention a few.

Adirondack Health's Rehabilitation and Sports Science Department offers a free screening to help people with pain or injury-related soreness. Following a brief assessment, a qualified staff member will suggest the appropriate next steps for each individual situation. Adirondack Health's skilled and caring staff will help people understand their injury or pain, and the options available for treatment. To learn more about SASTM or other services and treatments offered by Adirondack Health's Rehabilitation and Sports Science department, call (518) 897-2697.
