Act Now: Don’t Cut our Care

January 15th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE – Residents of the Tri-Lakes Region can play a critical roll in pushing back Governor David Patterson’s austere cuts to health care and other vital services.
The governor has proposed deep cuts to not only health care, but our schools, correctional facilities, and many more vital services in our region.
In difficult economic times, it is all the more important for residents of the Tri-Lakes region to have access to critical health and human services.  This is especially true for those individuals who lack the means to access care when they need it most and long before it is too late.
The bottom line cannot be about dollars and cents when the public looks to hospitals and nursing homes and the services they provide to take care of them in their time of need.
Two websites have been developed to assist area residents in contacting their legislators directly. They can log onto http://www.helpyourhospital.org/ or http://www.helpyournursinghome.org/ and simply enter your zip code to view the impact of the budget cuts on the medical center or nursing homes.  With the click of a mouse on the “Write Your Legislator” button, you will be able to send a message directly to your legislator based up on the zip code you have entered.  The message to your state representative is clear: Don’t cut the care our hospital and nursing homes provide.
Adirondack Medical Center has engaged an advertising campaign in local newspapers and radio stations asking residents to go to these websites and contact their state legislators.  In addition, the AMC Board of Trustees is expected to vote on a resolution this week requesting the governor and state legislature act to ensure that all federal Medicaid dollars received by New York State through a federal stimulus package be used for Medicaid health care services and specifically to offset the overwhelming state health care cuts and taxes proposed by the Governor.  Once approved, the resolution will be sent along to the governor’s office and respective state legislature offices.
For more information on the governor’s proposed budget or assistance in contacting your state representatives, contact the AMC Community Relations Office at 897-2341 or 897-2348.
