AMC-Uihlein Residents "Lend a Hand"

February 27th, 2007

SARANAC LAKE -  The residents and activities staff of AMC-Uihlein in Lake Placid are extending a hand of gratitude to U.S. soldiers serving overseas.
Since last September, the Lending Hands Club has been assembling care packages as part of "Project: Our Local Heroes."
"Our Local Heroes," the group's most recent project, is in its final stages before sending a "touch from home to our local heroes."
As part of "Our Local Heroes," care packages were assembled for local troops now serving their country over seas. Four packages were assembled in total - two for men and two for women.  The packages contain deodorant, soap, lotion, toothpaste and toothbrushes, razors, Chapstick, shampoo, dental floss and a package of flavored teas.  A current copy of a local newspaper, and a personalized letter from the residents and activity staff at AMC-Uihlein will be included in the care packages.
Activities Director, Allison Shumway, started the "Lending Hands Club" in late September 2006.  This group of dedicated residents and staff joined out of a strong desire to participate in an activity in which they were able to give back to their communities.
In addition to Shumway, the group is comprised of residents Florence Blanchard, Gertrude Farsnworth, Mae Fitzgerald, Janice Fortado, Hilda LaDue, Gladys Ruben, Anna Stoner, and Maureen Swank. Also helping to plan and prepare the care packages are Activity Assistants, Sheri Cornick. and Ashlie Smith.
Since its inception, the members of the "Lending Hands Club" have put together gift bags for the first graders at St. Agnes School in Lake Placid, and a basket with stockings filled with treats, collars, and other pet supplies was given to the Tri-Lakes Human Society in Saranac Lake.
The "Lending Hands Club" meets once a month at AMC-Uihlein located on Old Military Road in Lake Placid New York.
