AMC-Uihlein Makes Positive Gains in Latest DOH Survey

October 5th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE - A positive survey conducted in July by the state Department of Health at AMC-Uihlein is a clear demonstration the nursing home staff has embraced quality improvement measures designed to provide excellent resident care.

Quality improvement is an ongoing process for both AMC-Uihlein in Lake Placid and AMC-Mercy in Tupper Lake.  Both facilities recently announced they had joined the Advancing Excellence initiative, a national campaign that seeks to accelerate the rate of quality improvement in nursing homes by promoting excellence in care-giving for nursing home residents, monitoring key indicators of quality in nursing homes, and acknowledging the critical role of staff in providing high quality care.

Specifically, at AMC-Uihlein, the quality improvement efforts have included ongoing staff education on policies and procedures to ensure excellent resident care.  In addition to education, there is a continual process of reviewing policies and procedures to make sure resident care is generating positive outcomes.

"The entire staff from every department at AMC-Uihlein has worked incredibly hard over the past year to embrace the overall quality improvement process," said Michele Byno, Chief Long Term Care Officer for AMC.  "This latest inspection is a clear indication we are moving in the right direction."

These sentiments were echoed by one of the DOH surveyors who remarked "the folks at this facility have done a tremendous amount of work since the last survey.  It was a very good survey and the staff worked very hard.  The staff is dedicated to the residents and the residents are very fond of the staff."

The DOH conducts unannounced re-certification surveys on an annual basis.  Long Term Care facilities like AMC-Uihlein must be certified by the DOH in order to receive Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements.  Approximately 85 percent of AMC-Uihlein's residents are covered by Medicaid and Medicare.
