AMC to Offer Education, Resources for Health Care Decisions Day

April 5th, 2010

SARANAC LAKE - In observance of National Health Care Decisions Day on Friday, April 16, Adirondack Medical Center is hosting an education session to share information with the public about advanced health care planning and Pastoral Care.

Advanced health care planning, or Advance Directives as it is more commonly known, can consist of both oral and written orders intended to address a person's health care wishes if he or she is unable to speak for themselves.  Anyone who is 18 years of age or older, or has a chronic disease, should be aware of the need for Advance Directives.  Likewise, it is important to take into consideration the need to plan ahead and inform those closest to you about your wishes for end-of-life decisions before the time comes.  There are different forms of Advance Directives, as well as many situations presenting their own set of individual questions.

To help people sort through the many questions and array of information, AMC's Director of Pastoral Care, Pastor Steve Kovacevich, will be available in the Main Lobby at AMC in Saranac Lake from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 16 to assist the public with understanding Advance Directives.

Pastor Steve, who has recently joined the AMC family, will discuss the role of Pastoral Care in the health care setting.  As director of Pastoral Care, Pastor Steve promotes holistic patient care at AMC, providing spiritual and emotional care, crisis intervention, assistance in completing advance directives, and assisting patients, family members and friends during difficult life decisions.

By meeting spiritual needs, Pastor Steve's service enables people to draw upon the strength of their spirituality to meet the challenges in their lives.

In addition to information about Advance Directives and Pastoral Care, Pastor Steve will share literature and Advance Directive forms with members of the public who meet with him in the Main Lobby of AMC in Saranac Lake from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 16.
