AMC is Back Open for Business

March 23rd, 2009

SARANAC LAKE – Adirondack Medical Center is once again open for business, now that the boiler system is back online following a partial collapse of the chimney stack.
At a noon-time meeting Tuesday, hospital officials were briefed on the corrective action taken to restore boiler room operations, and it was decided the Medical Center can immediately begin admitting patients.  If needed, patients who are treated in the Emergency Department can be admitted to the hospital instead of being transferred to another facility.  Likewise, the Operating Department will resume normal function Wednesday morning, and schedules are being developed to accommodate the cases that were postponed due to the boiler room disruption.
“The fact that AMC is back open for business in a short period of time is completely due to the cooperation and dedication of so many talented individuals, both on our staff and throughout the area,” said Chandler Ralph, President and CEO of AMC.  “I want to thank the Tri-Lakes community for its patience and understanding during this challenging time.”
At around 9 p.m. Monday, a 10-foot section of temporary chimney was affixed to one of the hospital’s two boilers, which was slowly brought back online.  By Tuesday morning, the hospital was significantly warmer, and it was determined the boiler system was functioning within normal parameters.  During the course of the day, the remaining 20-foot section of the temporary chimney was installed.
Pending the final outcome of the investigation, it now appears that the cause of the disruption in the boiler room was the direct result of a partial collapse of the chimney that serves as an exhaust for the two boilers used for heat, hot water, and steam in the hospital portion of the Medical Center complex.
The initial incident took place at about 10 a.m. Sunday, and there were no injuries as a result of the chimney collapse.

CAPTION: Crews from Vermont Boiler Specialists, Inc., work on the temporary chimney stack for the AMC boiler system.
