AMC Works to Raise Awareness for Organ Donation

October 13th, 2010

SARANAC LAKE - Every day, an average of 19 Americans die due to a lack of transplantable organs.

Adirondack Medical Center, in conjunction with the Center for Donation & Transplant, is holding two public awareness events on Oct. 18 to provide information to the community regarding the value of signing an organ donor card.  This simple act can make the difference in another person's life.

Pam Wood, a registered nurse at AMC, and Sue McKillip, a registered nurse supervisor, along with a representative from the Center for Donations & Transplant, will be on hand to answer questions regarding organ donation.  The issue is a personal one for Pam, whose husband was an organ donor and was able to help save or improve the lives of others through his selfless act.

On Oct. 18, a public awareness event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in the Main Lobby of AMC in Saranac Lake, and from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Kinney Drugs on Broadway in Saranac Lake.

In addition to information about organ donation awareness, there will be literature available about completing a Health Care Proxy form.

The Center for Donation & Transplant (CDT) is a non-profit health care organization that coordinates the retrieval of donated organs and tissue at more than 43 hospitals throughout northeastern New York state and western Vermont. CDT ensures that the option of donation is offered to the family in an informative and compassionate manner, and provides long-term support and comfort to families and hospital personnel involved in the donation process.
