AMC Urges Public to Contact Legislators Over Budget Cuts

January 28th, 2010

SARANAC LAKE - Facing yet another round of bruising cuts, Adirondack Medical Center is encouraging residents of the Tri-Lakes region to contact their state lawmakers to voice their concerns.

The governor has proposed deep cuts to not only health care, but to education, correctional facilities, and many more vital services in the North Country.

Under the governor's proposal, AMC would endure a total budget loss of $551,671 in the 2010 fiscal year.  In its budget for 2010, AMC projected an operating margin, or excess revenue to reinvest in programs and services for the following year, of $220,000.  The governor's proposal would eliminate any hope of AMC improving upon or developing new programs and services for the residents of the Tri-Lakes region beyond 2010.

This is of particular concern in light of a budget proposal by the governor that targets several key sectors of the North Country economy.  If some or all of Gov. Paterson's cuts become reality, there will be a significant portion of the local population in need of critical health and human services - many of whom may not have the financial resources to pay for those services.

Hospitals and nursing homes, which are the economic engines of any community, must remain viable in order to serve as strong safety nets for the public in its time of need.

Two websites have been developed to assist area residents in contacting their legislators directly. They can log onto www.helpyourhospital.org or www.helpyournursinghome.org and simply enter your zip code to view the impact of the budget cuts on the medical center or nursing homes.  With the click of a mouse on the "Write Your Legislator" button, you will be able to send a message directly to your legislator based up on the zip code you have entered.

On March 3, a contingent of AMC representatives will be traveling to Albany along with health care providers across the state to protest the disproportionate cuts directed at hospitals and nursing homes.  AMC will also be meeting with Sen. Elizabeth "Betty" Little and Assemblywomen Janet Duprey and Teresa Sayward to discuss concerns with the state budget proposal.
