AMC Upgrading Mammography Services in Saranac Lake

August 27th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE - Adirondack Medical Center will continue to conduct mammograms at its Lake Placid and Tupper Lake locations while equipment upgrades and renovations are conducted at the main mammography suite in Saranac Lake during the month of September.

The equipment upgrades and renovations are part of a broader initiative to establish a Comprehensive Breast Imaging Program at AMC in Saranac Lake, made possible in part by a $500,000 grant from the Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation.

While mammograms at the Lake Placid and Tupper Lake sites will continue to be conducted with the current equipment and services supervised by the same highly trained staff and physicians, the new service in Saranac Lake will offer digital mammography once completed.

The upgrades at the Saranac Lake will commence on Aug. 31, and are expected to take one month to complete.  Mammography services at the Saranac Lake site are tentatively scheduled to resume on Oct 1.

If calling for an appointment during September, patients will have the option to wait for digital mammography services in Saranac Lake, or have the option to schedule a mammogram at the Lake Placid or Tupper Lake sites.

Mammography is the most important tool doctors have to screen for and diagnose breast cancer and track women who have been diagnosed.  Digital mammography uses the same technology as film, but the image is transferred to a digital file and viewed on a screen, eliminating the wait to develop a film image.  This is also a greener process as it eliminates the traditional chemicals used for film development.  The benefits of digital mammography include improved detection of breast cancers in women that have dense breast tissue; lower doses of radiation; faster access to the image for the Radiologist; a more precise reading of the image via zoom and contrast; shorter exam time for the patient; the convenience of digital storage; and eliminating the chemical waste associated with traditional image development.

As the leading provider of health care in the Tri-Lakes region and beyond, Adirondack Medical Center has hospitals in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, primary care clinics in Keene, Lake Placid, and Tupper Lake, and two skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
