AMC Sponsors Diabetes Self-Management Education Program

April 17th, 2008

SARANAC LAKE –  On a seemingly daily basis, the public is bombarded with alarming statistics about the diabetes epidemic and the deadly complications that may ensue.
The good news is that with today’s technologies and advances, people can now lead long and healthy lives in spite of being diagnosed with diabetes. One need not be powerless in the face of diabetes. Positive actions taken by the individual and his or her health care team can make a powerful and positive difference. Education is the key to successful management.
Beginning May 14, Adirondack Medical Center will offer its five-week comprehensive Diabetes Self -Management Education Program.  The course is taught by an interdisciplinary team including three physicians: Dr. David Johnson, Dr. Claude Roland, and Dr. Richard Erenstone, along with Pharmacist Peter Henry, Physical Therapist Rick Preston, and Dietitian/Certified Diabetes Educator Sharon Sorgule. Registered Nurses Ellen Winchell, Betsy Fuller, Peter Jones and Kathy Bonham round out the teaching team.
The program meets for five consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Redfield Board Room at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Included in the sessions is valuable information on nutrition, exercise, medications, and prevention of acute and chronic complications.
A physician referral is needed for insurance and Medicare coverage. Scholarships are available through the AMC Foundation, and registration is required.
