AMC Sponsors Diabetes Self-Management Education Program

December 30th, 2008

SARANAC LAKE – Diabetes is a disease of decision making, and self management is a critical component of success.
Whether it is understanding blood glucose targets, monitoring of glucose, balancing a diet and exercise to achieve a healthy weight, or taking multiple medications or insulin throughout the day, it takes significant effort to live with diabetes. Successful management however allows people with diabetes to live life to the fullest, and free from complications. Education is the key to successful management.  Having access to knowledgeable professionals who can teach, guide and coach people with diabetes into effective decision making can make the difference.
On January 21, Adirondack Medical Center will offer its six-week comprehensive Diabetes Self -Management Education Program.  Taught by an interdisciplinary staff of three physicians, a pharmacist, physical therapist, three registered nurses, a counselor and a dietitian/certified diabetes educator, this comprehensive program is designed for the person recently diagnosed with diabetes, as well as those who are trying to fine tune their management skills.
The program meets every Wednesday evening for six weeks from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Redfield Room at AMC in Saranac Lake.  A physician referral is needed for insurance and/or Medicare coverage.  Scholarships are available through the AMC Foundation.
