AMC Physician Assistant Earns High Honors

October 16th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE - Roy "Skip" Parker has been recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

He has been employed at Adirondack Medical Center since 1979, and currently works in the Lake Placid and Saranac Lake Emergency Departments.  At the time, Skip was the first Physician Assistant to be employed by AMC.

Skip earned the recognition due to his outstanding contributions to patient care and the profession during his 35 years as a physician assistant.  He also demonstrated significant dedication and involvement in the Tri Lakes community.  Skip has volunteered his time in the Medical Tent at the Iron Man for eight of the ten races in Lake Placid, and he has also collaborated with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and AMC in Lake Placid to develop a back-country rescue program.  Beyond the Tri-Lakes region, Skip helped establish three health clinics in Montana, and participated in medical missionary work in the Dominican Republic for three years.

Skip and his wife Jeanine reside in Vermontville.

Physician assistants (PAs) are licensed health professionals who practice medicine as members of a team with their supervising physician.  PAs deliver a broad range of medical and surgical services to diverse populations in rural and urban settings.  As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and prescribe medications.

In addition to hospitals in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, AMC operates community health centers in Keene, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.  AMC also operates skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
