AMC Offers Diabetes Self-Management Education Program

September 10th, 2012

SARANAC LAKE - Diabetes is a manageable disease for those who have the knowledge needed to take charge of their own care.

Important aspects of that care include following a healthy meal plan, monitoring blood glucose levels, maintaining an active physical lifestyle and learning to manage.  In most cases, medication is needed to keep glucose levels on target.  Juggling all of these tasks can be daunting.  Fortunately, there is help available to overcome these challenges.  Diabetes education and training is provided at Adirondack Medical Center to help people learn more about diabetes with the latest information, the tools to manage the disease and the necessary  support where needed.

On Sept. 19, AMC, a member of Adirondack Health, will offer its six week comprehensive Diabetes Self Management Education Program.  Taught by an interdisciplinary team of five physicians, a pharmacist, dietitian/certified diabetes educator, physical therapist and registered nurses, the group meets for six consecutive Wednesday evenings.  Nurse educator Ellen Winchell has recently met the strenuous credentialing needed to become a RN Certified Diabetes Educator and will be sharing her expertise weekly.  Included in the sessions is valuable information on nutrition, exercise, medications and prevention of acute and chronic complications.  A physician referral is needed for insurance and Medicare or Medicaid coverage.  Scholarships are available through the Adirondack Health Foundation.
