AMC Offers Diabetes Self Management Education Program

December 31st, 2009

SARANAC LAKE - The alarming statistics and serious complications associated with diabetes are certainly cause for concern, however, the good news is today's technological advances and knowledge help people with diabetes to live long and healthy lives.

Positive actions taken by the individual and their health care team can make a powerful and positive difference.  Education is the key to successful diabetes management.  A recent study noted by the American Diabetes Association of 635,000 people with the disease found that those who receive diabetes education are more likely to follow treatment recommendations and had 6 to 14 percent lower health care costs.

On January 13, Adirondack Medical Center will offer its six-week Comprehensive Diabetes Self-Management Education Program.  The course is taught by an interdisciplinary team including three physicians, a pharmacist, physical rehabilitation therapist, a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator, registered nurses and health educators.

Beginning January 13, the program takes place on six consecutive Wednesdays 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Redfield Room.  The sessions include valuable information on nutrition, exercise, medications, insulin pumps and prevention of acute and chronic complications.

A physician referral is needed for insurance and Medicare or Medicaid coverage.  Scholarships are available through the AMC Foundation.  Call 897-2611 with questions or to register.

The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at AMC is accredited by the American Diabetes Association.
