AMC Nursing Homes Join National Quality Initiative

September 9th, 2009

SARANAC LAKE - Both AMC-Mercy and AMC-Uihlein have joined nursing homes across the country in a voluntary national initiative - Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes campaign.

The campaign seeks to accelerate the rate of quality improvement in nursing homes by promoting excellence in care-giving for nursing home residents, monitoring key indicators of quality in nursing homes, and acknowledging the critical role of staff in providing high quality care.

The Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes campaign targets eight measurable clinical quality and organizational improvement goals. AMC-Mercy and AMC-Uihlein have chosen to focus their quality improvement efforts on four areas that fall within the campaign goals:

"We strive every day to provide the highest quality of care to our residents, and we are always working on new ways to promote quality," said Sabine Weber, Quality Improvement Coordinator for both facilities.  "This campaign allows us to be part of a broad national effort and demonstrate, through data and measurable accomplishments, our efforts are paying off for nursing home residents."

The majority of the nursing homes that have participated in the initiative have demonstrated improvement in the specific goal areas, and all of the nursing homes that have participated have shown greater improvement in the goal areas than those who did not participate in the initiative.

Individual teams comprised of staff from both AMC-Mercy and AMC-Uihlein have been formed to pursue one of the four goal areas.  Kick-off ceremonies were held Sept. 2 and 3 at each facility to formally launch the Advancing Excellence initiative.

AMC will provide the public with ongoing updates as the campaign moves forward.  Information will be shared through media releases and on its website, www.amcCares.org.
