AMC Mourns the Passing of Ira J. Ellen, M.D.

    SARANAC LAKE – It is with great sadness that Adirondack Medical Center announces the untimely death of Ira J. Ellen, M.D.
    A family practitioner, Dr. Ellen joined the AMC Medical Staff in August, 2008, and had been practicing at the Tupper Lake Health Center.
    Prior to his death, Dr. Ellen was caring for patients along with Patricia Allott, Nurse Practitioner.  In the interim, Ms. Allott will assist in the care of Dr. Ellen’s patients.  She will be joined by Majeed Siddiqui, M.D., who recently joined the AMC Medical Staff to practice at the health centers in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.  Dr. Siddiqui begins work on Tuesday.  A more formal announcement of Dr. Siddiqui’s arrival will be forthcoming within the next few days.
    AMC will begin immediately to recruit an additional physician for the Tupper Lake Health Center.  In addition to these steps, AMC is exploring other options in the interim to ensure there is no interruption in the level of care for Tupper Lake residents.  Any additional information regarding the Tupper Lake Health Center will be shared with the community immediately as it becomes available.
    Dr. Ellen earned his Medical Degree from Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium in 1973, which was followed by residencies in General Surgery and Family Practice at hospitals in the New York City region.  His extensive professional medical background included several years in Family Practice in New York, Ohio and New Jersey.  Dr. Ellen had also held positions in the Emergency Room at Parkway Hospital in Forest Hills, N.Y., as Director of the Detoxification Unit at St. Francis Hospital in Jersey City, N.J., and for the New York State Department of Corrections.  Prior to taking the position with the Tupper Lake Health Center, Dr. Ellen was the Medical Director at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill, N.Y.
    He is survived by his wife, Peggy.
