AMC Foundation Awards $50,000 in Grants
September 17th, 2010
SARANAC LAKE - The Adirondack Medical Center Foundation is proud to announce it has awarded $50,000 in grants to support the enhancement of community wellness and wellness education that work in concert with programs or services at AMC.
The grant funding will supports a diverse range of local programs and services ranging from new heart monitoring equipment specific to the life-saving in-flight needs of North Country Life Flight to healthy living classes on cooking, exercise and psychology.
"This year our request for grant applications garnered the biggest response rate in the history of the program," said Hannah Hanford, Executive Director of the Foundation and Community Relations. "While this was gratifying, it made the work of the grant review committee very difficult because the applications far exceeded the $50,000 amount budgeted for requests. In the end, the committee recommended to the Foundation Board to fund, or partially fund, nine of the grant applications. The Foundation Board of Trustees is proud to work in partnership with the non-profits in the area who share in the mission of enhancing wellness in our community."
The largest grant award was given to the "Strength for Healing" program offered through the AMC Merrill Cancer Center. "Strength for Healing" was inspired by the fundamental recognition of the challenges faced by patients and their families in the fight against cancer. To help with the healing process, patients are offered Guided Imagery and Gentle Restorative Yoga classes to strengthen both the mind and body.
Following is the complete list of groups and programs awarded grants by the AMC Foundation for 2010-11:
- AMC Diabetes Self-Management Education Program: Scholarships for participation in the education program; $1,600.
- Bariatric Summit: A regional seminar for physicians and health care providers on the topic of follow-up treatment plans for bariatric patients; $2,500.

- Fit and Explore: Healthy living classes on cooking, exercise and psychology for Fit for Life and Cardiac Rehabilitation programs at AMC and Bariatric patients; $3,500.
- Mercy Care for the Adirondacks: Through the Aging in Place program, volunteers assist senior citizens so they can stay in their homes, such as providing transportation to medical appointments; $5,000.
- NENY EMS Education Corporation: Scholarships for area first responders taking the new paramedic course at North Country Community College; $3,500.
- North Country Life Flight: Purchase of a light-weight Propaq, which monitors patient vital signs during in-flight transport; $9,749.

To the extent that funds are available, the AMC Foundation annually awards up to $50,000 in grants to not-for-profit organizations within the Medical Center's primary and secondary service area, which work in concert with programs and services of AMC. Grants awarded provide financial support to community projects and services to enhance community wellness and wellness education, and are consistent with the Medical Center's mission, vision and strategic initiatives.
