August 27th, 2006
SARANAC LAKE - As part of its mission to enhance community wellness, the Adirondack Medical Center Foundation approved several grants totaling $19,311 at its August meeting in support of the arts in health care, breast cancer awareness, diabetes self -management education, boating safety, and North Country Life Flight.
North Country Life Flight was awarded a $10,255 grant in recognition of its mission to maintain and provide emergency care in our region. North Country Life Flight, in operation since 1989, receives 80 percent of its funding from individual, foundation, and corporate sources. Remaining finances are received through the generosity of municipal government and other funding sources.
North Country Life Flight is a professional, but primarily volunteer, air medical team providing a high level of emergency care from hospitals and accident scenes to advanced care facilities via a Bell 430 helicopter with the New York State Police. North Country Life Flight is a free service provided to the residents and visitors of Franklin, Essex, Clinton, Warren, Washington, Hamilton, and St. Lawrence counties.
"In a rural region such as ours, the services provided by North Country Life Flight make the difference between life and death," said Cheryl Breen Randall, Executive Director of the AMC Foundation, "We are proud and honored to support the dedicated group of individuals who make this vital service possible."
Life Flight will be using the grant money to purchase equipment for the care and assessment of patients in the field.
In addition to North Country Life Flight, the following groups were awarded grants by the AMC Foundation:
* Adirondack Arts & Healing: Scholarship support for arts and healing retreat at the Sagamore for women with cancer and chronic illness - $3,156.
* AMC-Diabetes Self-Management Education: Scholarship money for class participants with financial need and/or no health insurance - $900.
* AMC-Mammography Media Blitz: To coordinate a three-county, four-hospital media blitz during October 2006 for breast cancer awareness and prevention - $3,000. This grant was matched by the Foundation of CVPH Medical Center.
* AMC-Personal Flotation Devices: Purchase, distribute, recover, inspect, and re-direct 50 life jackets (PFDs) to boaters and to educate the boating public in AMC's service area - $2,000.
Annually to the extent that funds are available, the AMC Foundation awards up to $50,000 in grants to not-for-profit organizations within the Medical Center's primary and secondary service area. Grants awarded provide financial support to community projects and services that will enhance community wellness and wellness education, and are consistent with the Medical Center's mission, vision and strategic initiatives. Additionally, grants may be awarded to Adirondack Medical Center for programs not funded through the AMC's operational budget and where outside funding is not available.
