AMC Celebrates "Health, Hope & Healing"

May 7th, 2010

SARANAC LAKE - Hospitals and nursing homes are more than a place where people go to heal, they are a part of the community that foster health and represent hope.  From providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world and caring for neighbors, family and friends, health care facilities are central to a vibrant and optimistic community.  That's the message Adirondack Medical Center is touting with the 2010 National Health Care Week theme "Health, Hope & Healing."

The event theme is the centerpiece of a national campaign aimed at celebrating health care facilities across the country during the May 9-15 celebration of National Health Care Week.

"National Health Care Week, first and foremost, is a celebration of people," said Chandler Ralph, President and CEO of AMC.  "We're extremely proud of each member of our staff and we recognize the important role they play in extending a sense of trust to our patients, nursing home residents and our communities."

The nation's largest health care event, National Health Care Week, dates back to 1921 when it was suggested by a magazine editor who hoped a community-wide celebration would alleviate public fears about hospitals. The celebration, launched in Chicago, succeeded in promoting trust and goodwill among members of the public and eventually spread to facilities across the country.

To celebrate National Health Care Week, AMC has several events planned at its hospitals in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, health centers in Lake Placid, Tupper Lake and Keene, and its skilled nursing facilities in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.  AMC will be kicking off Health Care Week on Friday, May 7, by participating in Adopt-A-Highway along the two-mile stretch of state Route 86 in front of the Medical Center in Saranac Lake.  Volunteers from AMC departments will be scouring the roadside for litter and other debris in the afternoon.

The high point of Health Care Week will take place on Wednesday when AMC honors employees for their years of service to the Medical Center.  Nearly 125 employees will be recognized for achieving five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service.

AMC has also invited students from area schools to incorporate the "Health, Hope & Healing" theme into art projects as part of their class work.  The artwork will be displayed in the halls of AMC over the course of the next several weeks.

National Hospital Week began in 1921 and, over the decades, has helped revolutionize the public's view of hospitals and nursing homes. The health care industry employs more than 14 million throughout the U.S., and locally AMC employs over 900 dedicated individuals.  AMC is proud to celebrate its facilities, its staff, and its continuing commitment to the community as it looks forward to 2011 and its 100th year of caring for the Tri-Lakes region and beyond.
