AHA Presents Awards to AMC and Montefiore Leaders
May 7th, 2006
SARANAC LAKE - At its recent Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., the American Hospital Association (AHA) presented awards to two HANYS (Healthcare Association of NYS) members recognizing their exceptional service to their health care facilities and communities.
AHA, in partnership with HANYS, awarded Chandler Ralph, President and Chief Executive Officer of Adirondack Medical Center, with the Partnership for Action Grassroots Champion Award. As a 2006 Grassroots Champion, Ms. Ralph was recognized for her exceptional leadership in generating grassroots and community activity in support of Adirondack Medical Center's mission.
The Partnership for Action Grassroots Champion Award was created to recognize those hospital leaders who most effectively educate elected officials on how major issues affect their hospital's vital role in the community, who have done an exemplary job in broadening the base of community support for their hospital, and who are tireless advocates for their hospitals and patients.
Under Chandler Ralph's leadership, Adirondack Medical Center has developed one of the premier grassroots advocacy programs in New York State. Steve Kroll of HANYS states, "Ms. Ralph's spirit has set a tremendous example for AMC employees, administrative and medical staff, and trustees who participate in a multi-faceted advocacy program that includes consistent participation in state and federal advocacy days, hosting lawmakers and staff at the hospital, participating in the Political Action Committee, grassroots letter writing, media engagement, and implementing community advocacy strategies. Chandler Ralph clearly influences her staff and community by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while staying true to AMC's mission."
"Your leadership and dedication to promoting the mission of hospitals has added a strong voice on a local and national level," said AHA President Dick Davidson upon presentation of the Grassroots Champion Award to Chandler Ralph. "The compassion and hard work you have demonstrated has made a difference for your patients and your community and has earned you this special recognition."
Examples of some of the grassroots advocacy initiatives Adirondack Medical Center has taken on under Ms. Ralph's direction include AMC hosting more than a half dozen community forums to strengthen ties between the hospital and the communities it serves, and helping expand access to health insurance through the region.
In 2002, AMC launched an Uninsured Task Force to reduce the overall number of uninsured citizens and to ensure that all children would have health insurance. With a concerted community focus and partnership, the AMC Uninsured Task force has made a tremendous difference in the lives of its uninsured communities despite the struggling economy of the North County.
The AHA also presented the Justin Ford Kimball Innovators Award to Spencer "Spike" Foreman, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. The Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in health care delivery and financing. # # # #
