Frequently asked Questions | What is Bariatric Surgery?
Obesity is a serious health threat. It can shorten your lifespan
significantly and have a dramatic impact on your quality of life.
Adirondack Medical Center's comprehensive weight management program has
surgical and non-surgical weight management options for people of all
ages and stages of weight-management need.
Adirondack Medical Center is proud to serve the area as home to the
only Bariatric (Obesity) Surgery Program in northeastern New York. Our
program has been recognized as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
by the Surgical Review Corporation.
We have been performing weight loss surgery since 2000. In addition to the open gastric bypass surgery, Dr. Michael Hill is performing the surgery laproscopically, with a much smaller incision, which reduces the amount of time the patient has to spend in the hospital. Dr. Edward Hixson is the medical director of the Bariatric program.
The surgery, in essence, makes the stomach smaller, making you feel full after you eat small portions and it also bypasses a small segment of small intestine, which means not all of the food you eat will be absorbed into your body. These are tools patients can use to lose excess weight and have long-term weight loss maintenance.
In addition to the gastric bypass, we also offer the Lap-Band which is a less invasive weight loss surgical procedure. The Lap-Band reduces the stomach capacity and restricts the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. The LAP-BAND(r) System procedure does not require stomach cutting and stapling or gastrointestinal re-routing to bypass normal digestion.
You won't have to go through this alone. There is a team of professionals standing behind every bariatric patient at AMC. Patients are carefully screened and a team of doctors, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, mental health professionals and discharge planners all work with each individual to make sure they are ready to make the lifelong changes necessary for a successful outcome.
Patient education is the single most important factor in ensuring positive outcomes. All patients must participate in education and support groups with physicians, nurses and nutritionists.
